Hurricane
Isabel strikes Portsmouth.
Hurricane Isabel, a category 2 hurricane blew through the East Cost, hitting
Portsmouth hard. Luckily, we all had a week of warning, letting everyone prepare
for her arrival. Businesses up and down High Street were boarded up, sand bagged,
and closed down. As we all knew from hurricanes past, there would be a river
flowing down High Street, no doubt about it. The storm was devastating to many,
thousands lost power, water, and telephone for days. Hundreds of trees uprooted
and crashed through houses, boats surfaced onto land, and the storm surge flooded
hundreds of basements causing millions of dollars in damage. Luckily, the Gallery
made it okay, no internal flooding, no damage at all, just a little lost electricity.
We only wish everyone else was as fortunate as us. We still pray for those
who
are
trying
to get
back on their feet.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. The official ribbon cutting ceremony
led by Mayor James J. Holley, III was a small but sweet gathering
of the community. Business owners on the High Street corridor,
Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce representatives, friends, and
family all turned out on a bright sunny afternoon to see the official
ribbon cutting ceremony. As Mayor Holley talked about past childhood
memories of purchasing his first bicycle at 607 High Street, previously
Harrells sporting goods store, we were all reminded of how a century
old building was resurrected into
a shiny new contemporary art gallery. As Michael has always said, "this
building and the renovation it has gone through, is a work of art
in itself."

Artists Reception. The official opening of the Gallery
and a chance to meet the artists. The Gallery hosted an evening
reception with the artists, an open invitation to the general public
to come and mingle amidst great art. Food and drinks were bountiful,
there was wonderful classical music provided by Herb
Smith, and the artists were ecstatic to see the turnout of
attendance. What a great night for everyone, including Barbara
and Michael.

Renovations complete, let's open the doors. On an "unofficial"
soft opening (especially since the Gallery is closed on Mondays),
on
Monday August 4th, Barbara and Michael opened the doors of the
Gallery to the public. The business owners on the High Street corridor
were delighted to see the Gallery open up. The customers were excited
with anticipation as they walked in off the street, gleaming with
smiles and nudging their friends as if to say "oh, I've got to have
this!". Now it's up to them, to spread the word...
