Ray
and Carol Vick began working in clay in 1997, after building
their studio in Suffolk, Virginia. They have exhibited their award-winning
work in several galleries and art shows on the east coast.
After a few years of creating strictly functional work, the couple made a decision
to focus exclusively on the pieces they enjoyed making the most - large platters,
teapot sets, lidded jars and vases, and indoor fountains.
Carol earned a Bachelor
of Science degree in art education from James Madison University and has taken
graduate studies at Virginia Commonwealth University and Old Dominion University.
Carol's personal style includes both wheel-thrown and slab work, often leaving
part of the piece unglazed to stress
the clay's texture. Her platters, lidded jars and teapot sets now include bamboo
wrapped with waxed linen cord.
Ray is a computer programmer in Chesapeake who took up pottery in 1997. He has
experimented with different techniques and now focuses on large decorative platters,
and fountains. He enjoys combining his large wheel-thrown forms with quartz,
granite,
copper tubing, and bamboo to create soothing and earthy fountains.
Ray and Carol feel that they have found their favorite forms of expression in
clay and are excited about future possibilities within the framework of platters,
lidded jars, teapots and fountains. They are pleased to be a part of this exhibit
at the Vincent Hester Gallery and will be glad to fill special orders through
the gallery.
