Deborah Small is a native of Portsmouth. A graduate of Norcom High School who went on to complete her studies at Norfolk State College in 1974. Receiving a BA degree in Graphic Design launched her career.
Deborah's works are an exciting culmination of multimedia art. They journey through an evolution of 26 years of creating many diverse visual works. African and Native American heritage are evident in each piece.
In 1978 her professional career began. After participating in many local, national and international shows, she continued to broaden her pallet and develope a very distinctive style. The viewer of her art can expect the element of freshness and difference while viewing her works.

Styles include Tapestries, Tablets, Collars, Totems, and Accessories. Tablets, totems and accessories utilize paper mache' incorporated with other varied materials. Paintings incorporate multiple layers of acrylic and metallic paint on canvas finished with embroidery and beading. Various shapes of canvas are sewn to a canvas surface to create tapestries and broaches.
Since the collage mixed media paintings of 1978, the works have become a mixture of painting, drawing, sewing, embroidery, and beading. Each technique embraced as a child.
