Artist Statement: After participating in the performing arts most of my life, I finally found the world of clay and pottery. My heart and my interest have been claimed by the rhythm of the wheel as I turn a bowl and the slap of the clay on canvas when I mold or shape a slab into what is frequently a surprise—even to me. There is an immediacy and spontaneity to clay that is unlike any other medium…a direct current from the brain to the fingers that somehow produces a true image. Individual pottery is like a fingerprint—unique, and easily recognizable. Searching for that uniqueness is the challenge of every potter, and nurturing it is what keeps the potter working. The shapes found in nature, from seashells to flower pods, inspire me to create my own forms. I hope that those who see my work will respond to it in their own unique ways and celebrate the process of creation.
