| Rita
Marlier has exhibited her sculpture extensively in Hampton
Roads for the last 35 years. She has an MFA in Sculpture from Carnegie
Mellon
University and taught at Carlow College in Pittsburgh before coming
to Norfolk in 1968 to teach at the Norfolk Museum Art School. After
that school closed, she taught at Virginia Wesleyan, Christopher Newport,
Eastern Virginia Medical School and, from 1980 until she retired in
1995 at Old Dominion University.
Rita Marlier’s stoneware sculpture represents a world of people,
animals and other playful creatures attending their everyday adventures.
Her sculpture has strong structural components of arches and pyramids
while inferring immanent action. Hampton Roads gallery goers have followed
the adventures of these characters for the last 35 years. Now, at the
Vincent Hester Gallery in Portsmouth, Rita’s sculptures are to
be found in their latest pursuits. |
