Since 1963 Ruth Laakso, a professional artist, has been a force and one of the most highly recognized names in the Hampton Roads art scene. As a young woman, Ruth was born and raised in New York City. She studied at the Art Student League and later at the University of Miami in Florida. Early studies with Robert Motherwell created an interest and focus in abstraction. Now a committed land & seascape artist, Laakso combines the freedom of abstraction with the dedication of realism. "At this time, for the most part, I paint landscapes. Early works of mine were involved with social themes and abstract experiments," said Laakso. "For me, as with many artists, there is a constant search for our own special visual identity...be it new concepts in style, themes, presentation. Some of these are successful, some are disasters, until suddenly...there it is! Something sets off the passion, and your work takes on an intense focus. For me it happened in Helsinki, Finland." "Painting landscapes and seascapes became for me, that focus. Painting
for me is to focus on Earth’s incredible abundance and beauty," stated
the award winning artist. "There is a time-sense and urgency for it’s
survival. I try to give homage to it."
