Susan Hecht has been on a creative journey all her life. This journey began early and took many twists and turns. Raised in a military family, Susan moved every few years and found herself drawn to new artistic expressions in each new place. Susan attended the University of South Carolina. After graduating, she started her career in Advertising as a graphic designer and production manager. She headed to Washington DC, where she married her college sweetheart. Her husband’s job brought them to Boston, where she continued to work in the advertising field. Once she and her husband started a family, they moved to Portland Maine, and Susan decided to stay home to raise the family. In her world full of diapers and playgroups, it wasn’t long before the creative itch started nagging her again. Susan started to bake desserts for a local restaurant and began a 7-year study of dance. Another move brought her family to Chesapeake, VA. Susan continued her dessert business, and expanded that to working with the chef in the kitchen of a local restaurant. With every move, Susan had a house to decorate, so she enrolled in a furniture painting class. This is where Susan picked up her first paintbrush, under the direction of Devi Ann Moore, and since then life hasn’t been the same. Susan decided to paint an old rickety chair; “safe and simple enough,” she thought. Little did she know that this was the turning point in her life. This chair gave her the confidence to enter into the fine art world. With one more move, Susan then came to North Carolina where the rural landscapes and Carolina marshes quickly caught her eye. Not only has she settled into the area but also she has settled in with her creative voice. She continued her formal studies of painting, figure drawing and pastels at Duke University, Sertoma Art Center and Pullen Park Art Center. Additionally she has enjoyed many workshops with award-winning artists, such as Kevin Beck, Luana Winner, Toni Cappel, Susan Ogilvie and Bob Rankin. Susan works
in a variety of media, but concentrates on acrylics and pastels. Her
work
has been exhibited and has received awards throughout
the Raleigh area since 1999. Susan paints and exhibits in her working
studio and gallery, Studio 123, in historic downtown Apex. Susan is currently
the Treasurer of The Fine Arts League of Cary, and a member of the
Visual Art Exchange
and the Durham Arts Guild. She is also an exhibiting member of the Artist’s
Gallery in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
