We are very
excited to have the work of Michael Preble in our
gallery. A graduate of Cornell University (BA in Art History) and California
State
University (Master of Arts in Humanities), Michael comes to us from Little
Rock, where he was the Deputy Director for Programming and the Director
of the Museum School for the Arkansas Arts Center. While receiving honors
and awards as a published writer, curator, speaker and photographer,
Michael’s work has taken him worldwide. In addition to many articles
for the art and travel industry, he has recently concluded his guest
curator position for the William Baziotes Retrospective Exhibition for
the Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy. He is a resident of Norfolk.
Artist Statement
I have always been a photographer, beginning as a child on family
vacations. I still have several of my favorite childhood cameras. I
was active,
too, in the 1960s and 1970s, as an occasional vacation shooter. It
was not until the early 80s that I used the camera to move beyond
casual documentation, to capture more than the familiar or the anecdotal.
Given some concentration in architectural photography and travel
photography, I soon began to focus on the storytelling quality of
photographs. I like real stuff in real time, capturing what's passing
by, or what's just around the corner that you almost missed.
