Muriel
Handford A native of Connecticut and a Navy
wife, Muriel graduated as a registered nurse from St. Luke’s
Hospital in New York City and as a family nurse practitioner from
Medical College of Virginia. Upon moving to Virginia Beach in 1971,
she became interested in pottery at Virginia Beach Contemporary
Arts Center.
Each piece of her pottery is truly unique, a personal expression in
clay. Whether it is the lines and glaze creating an effect in a tiny
pot or the large angular form of her sculptural work, she employs the
ancient Japanese method of raku to achieve the desired effect.
